Herd Manager job - South Wales

We are looking for a Herd Manager to join our dairy business in Hengoed, Nr Cardiff, South Wales. 

Our dairy business is part of a diverse farming operation. We milk 750 cows and have recently invested in a new 64-point rotary parlour. Our buildings are under continuous development with the ambition to deliver maximum cow comfort and health. We are a dedicated Sainsbury supplier and therefore adhere to the highest welfare and production standards. We are focussed on implementing key performance indicators through meticulous attention to detail. We manage the herd on the Bovisync management platform and use the Cowmanager animal monitoring system to ensure reproduction and health targets. We have a weekly routine hoof trimming visit along with weekly vet routine visits. We also engage an independent Repro team to AI all animals. We rear all replacement heifers on farm to calve into the herd at 24 months. We are fully EID integrated in the parlour and handling system and implement key herd tasks through the handling area. Heifers are housed in accommodation with locking head yokes for 150 head.

We are looking for a candidate who wants to drive the efficiency of the dairy forward, who has proven experience managing high yielding cows and who is not only passionate about dairy farming but who can also lead, motivate and influence a diverse farm team. Your role as Herd Manager will involve the day to day management of the dairy unit and team. You will work with the farm owner and their trusted advisors to set and achieve technical and financial KPIs. You will have the opportunity to use your exceptional stockmanship and technical skills to maximise cow performance and will assist with the development of existing protocols through the effective use of cow management information available via Bovisync. Within our team of 10 you will play a significant part in the development of key roles and skills required by our team. You will have overall responsibility for key tasks and personally oversee the daily management of the cows and youngstock including emergency hoof trimming along with calving cows, drying off and keeping the associated records on Bovisync/BCMS. The appointed person will liaise with, and be supported by the owners, while leading, motivating and developing our team. Foot-trimming experience is preferred. Excellent team-building and organisational skills are essential.

Pay & Reward: Based on 55 hours/week (including 1 in 3 scheduled weekend shifts) with regular time off. Package is negotiable for the right candidate. In addition, we will offer 21 days holiday and UK Bank Holidays per calendar year (Jan 1st Dec 31st).

Location: Living and working in the foot of the Brecon Beacons National Park with the beautiful Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire countryside within 20 minutes. We are also 30 minutes from Cardiff with the amenities and activities it offers. There are a wide range of schools to suit children of all ages in proximity of the Farm.
