Come and join us on the banks of loch Tay in highland Perthshire, Scotland.
We currently run 1650 black face Ewes, sell our best shearlings at Stirling, Lanark and Dalmally and keep our own replacement Ewe Hoggs. We are currently moving in a different direction, reducing our breeding flock down to 1200 so that we can look at soil management and other breeds of sheep. Something more profitable than Black face potentially. We are still going to keep the blackies on the hill but may look elsewhere for the 2000 inbye acres. We also run 35 cows and are slowly expanding that up to 60. We are looking for someone to take the lead and advise us on breeds of sheep and help us move forward before expanding the numbers back up to an appropriate number for the ground, using efficient grass management techniques. The person we are looking for is more of a head shepherd than a manager.
The job comes with an approximate salary of £27K, a house, council tax paid, £300 clothing allowance, 15 sheep personal flock that you can run with the estate sheep. We have a second shepherd, a cattleman who also manages the crops and 2 gamekeepers for the pheasants and the grouse on the hill.
We are reducing the stock head on the Estate as a temporary measure so that we can reduce the fertiliser output, reduce the silage burden, improve the grazing, fix the fences and generally optimise all aspects of the estate. We will bring the stock numbers up once the ground starts to regenerate itself and find an appropriate stocking density for this ground. We are currently investing heavily in lime and the quality of the ground and are really positive about the prospects for the future here.
The successful applicant will be expected to take the lead on developing the use of technology to improve efficiency, have experience on rotational grazing techniques, have a vast experience of taking sheep welfare through a calendar year and have experience managing staff.
