Head Herdsperson job - Dorset
South West

Exciting opportunity for a motivated herdsperson to head our dairy team on our progressive, family run organic dairy farm. The successful applicant will be responsible for the milking, care and daily tasks involved in the managment of our 350 cows. We run a forage-based, autumn block calving herd, milking in a full-spec Fullwood 24:48 parlour with the help of an assistant. The dairy complex had a major update in 2019, including installation of a new parlour, milk meters with E-ID, automatic feeding, modern dairy software, fully updated handling facilities, auto-scrapers, segregation gate, auto-foothbath, electric foot-trimming crush, cluster-flush and rubber matting throughout. The cows graze the pastures throughout the grazing seasons, accessed via a cow track system and are housed and fed TMR through the winter months.

The herdsperson should have a proactive approach to responsibilities such as dairy hygiene, herd health, breeding/heat detection, foot care, record-keeping, TMR and grass allocation. Assistance and advice will be provided from the farmer as well as professionals including the vet, nutrition/grazing consultant, foot trimmer, AI technician etc. Candidates must have experience in the dairy industry and be able to work with others, have excellent organisational, communication and record-keeping skills as well as high hygiene and welfare standards. Applications are welcomed from those with ambition and wishing to progress their career. Accommodation is provided on site in a three-bedroom house constructed in 2015 located close to the dairy. The farm is situated between Dorchester and Weymouth with good road links, local amenities and excellent schools nearby. We offer an excellent salary, regular time-off and a pleasant working environment.
