Herdsman/woman wanted for spring-calving dairy unit, Crediton / Exeter. We have increased our herd size and now also pasteurise and sell milk through two vending machines. We will happily consider part-time options (if we can match the hours up), an apprentice or a full-time role; we love teaching people who are keen to progress!
We are looking for someone with a cheery nature and a love of cows to work with us to continue to take the farm forward. Some experience is helpful but attitude is more important - young or old provided you're keen to learn we are always happy to train people and to take on new ideas too.
We milk about 300 cows. The cows are all NZ breeding, mainly Friesian cross Jersey. Dairy replacements are reared on the farm.
This role will include all aspects of dairying, though relatively little tractor work, mainly working alongside herd owner and full-time member of staff. Work type varies through the seasons: milking, feeding, grass budgeting, welfare of stock, calf rearing, record keeping, yard scraping, putting bales out, fencing, pasteurising, delivering milk to vending machines & cleansing churns & pasteuriser, and maintenance of farm equipment. Training will be given where necessary.
The herdsperson is responsible as part of the small team for producing milk to a high standard with low SCC and bactoscan results for premium payments. The cows are milk recorded 4 times a year and cow records are kept by computer. Herd fertility has improved year on year over the six seasons that we have been at the farm; 6 week in-calf rate was 82% in 2019, 2020 & 2021.
Contractors are used for spreading fertilizer, mowing for silage, silage making and slurry spreading. Some of these jobs may, in time, be done by the farm. The herdsman/woman is also responsible for keeping a tidy farm, farm maintenance and weed control. We work 1 in 4 weekends on a rota for most of the year, but double up during calving.
Single bedroom flat-type accommodation is available with this position.

We are really keen to find someone who wants to take a dairy career further; we enjoy training keen people and after a couple of years would hope that the right person would take on our 2 i/c job and carry on learning more. I am a farm animal vet so there is plenty of opportunity to learn even more animal health aspects.
