Description

Following a retirement after 40 years, we are seeking a hardworking, dependable stockperson for our suckler and finishing enterprise.

The Farm:

Running around 400 cows, all progeny are retained and finished on farm. We calve April/May and August/September, however are working towards all spring calving. Historically our breeding program has been to cross Angus and Simmental but going forward we are looking to replace the Simmental with Stabiliser genetics. We are seeking to produce easy calving and low input suckler cows without compromising on the quality of our finished animal. Cattle are finished as both bulls and steers, with bullocks spending a second summer at grass before being housed on a finishing ration. Cattle are rotationally grazed and work is ongoing improving infrastructure of the farm to do this.

Alongside the cattle enterprise, we grow cereal and forage crops allowing us to be self-sufficient in feed. This usually comprises 150Ac of Barley and Oats and 50Ac of Kale or forage crop. Drilling is done by ourselves with a Claydon drill and a Claas Medion Combine is used to harvest our own grain and some local customers.

The farm benefits from a modern steading and cattle handling facilities.

Duties are varied throughout the year but will include:

  • All aspects of stock work including assisting at calving time

  • Routine health treatments of cattle and weight recording

  • Operating diet feeder and straw bedder

  • Maintenance (Fencing, digger work, improvement projects)

  • A variety of tractor work (Cultivations, Slurry, Hauling grain)

Experience in both working with cattle and driving a tractor is required for this position but the correct attitude is key. The successful candidate will have good attention to detail, a willingness to learn new practices and work well as part of a team.
