We are looking for a Head Herdsperson to take responsibility for milking, foot trimming and AI of our 150 cow milking herd of pedigree Guernsey Cows - on the island of Guernsey.
Situated in the Channel Islands, Guernsey boasts the most fantastic coastline with a wealth of delicious eateries and spectacular views. Just a 5 minute drive from the airport, with regular flights to Southampton, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and Exeter, our Farm is one of the island's larger dairy farms with all milk produced on-island being sold to Guernsey Dairy. Regular ferry crossings to Poole and Portsmouth Harbours are also available from St Peter Port harbour via Condor Ferries.
Currently farming out of traditional granite buildings, the farm was recently bought by a family of investors who are currently working with CowPlan to design new farm buildings with plans to erect new buildings (cubicle sheds, parlour, clamps etc) within the next 2 years.
Milking is twice a day on a 14:28 herringbone De Laval and the herd is AYR calving. We are currently working towards eradicating Johne's from the herd and the island is free of bTB. The cows are cubicle housed in the winter, with access to grazing through the spring and summer months. The farm benefits from technology such as Cow Manager and Uniform in order to assist with herd health, fertility and data management. We rear our own replacements and beef calves are sold and travel fortnight to the neighbouring island of Alderney.
We are looking for a forward-thinking, hard-working, enthusiastic, motivated and driven individual with a passion for dairy farming to join our young, fast-paced, solution-focused team. You must have good attention to detail and be able to work alone as well as within a team and take responsibility for your role. Animal welfare is at the forefront of our focus so the individual we take on must pride themselves in promoting happy, healthy cows. The successful candidate will need to have proven ability as you will be responsible for both the cows and overseeing youngstock. You will need to be proactive in your approach to work with the flexibility to cope with unplanned issues or emergencies when they arise.
Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential as well as computer literacy, good record keeping, a clean driving licence and a minimum level of basic experience of tractor driving.
