Description

We are looking for a general farm worker who is interested in both enterprises, and enjoys the variety that having a mixed farm offers. The job role involves assisting with the work associated with the dairy herd, including rearing dairy herd replacements from weaning to first calving, feeding and bedding all farm livestock and relief milking. To assist with arable field work, including cultivating, rolling, dung spreading, slurry spreading and grain carting. To carry out general farm work including yard maintenance, loading and unloading lorries, machine maintenance and general estate jobs.

The farm situated just South West of Salisbury. This is a dairy/arable farm, comprising approximately 360 hectares. The livestock enterprise includes a dairy herd of 170 pedigree Holstein cows plus associated youngstock. The herd strategy is one of high input high output and all replacements are reared on the farm. The arable enterprise is approximately 190 hectares plus 50 hectares of forage maize.

Responsibilities:


  • To assist in the day to day running of the dairy herd and arable enterprise.

  • To accurately weigh, mix and feed TMR in line with rations provided by the farm nutritionist and to operate feeding equipment properly and safely.

  • To undertake practices synonymous with good stockmanship, for example: health monitoring, dehorning, castration, prompt identification and treatment of sick animals and recording of treatments, assisting with difficult calvings and ensuring good standards of cleanliness in all areas of work.

  • To maintain feed stores and silage clamps to a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness. To monitor feed stocks and inform the farm manager of low stocks.

  • To bed up all farm livestock on a daily basis.

  • Relief milking to milk and manage the herd on the herdsmans days off, annual holidays and whenever required, following the same procedures and routines as undertaken by the herdsman.

  • Maintenance of necessary records including feeding, medicine, NVZ.

  • To assist herdsman with tasks such as vaccinations, cattle handling.

  • To handle livestock in a calm, professional manner at all times.

  • To clean out livestock housing as appropriate, keeping records of manure/slurry spreading for NVZ.

  • To assist with general farm work as required e.g. fencing, hedge trimming, drier operation, forage operations and general arable operations and to carry out basic machinery maintenance.

  • To work as a team member and communicate work-related information with the appropriate farm personnel without conflict.

  • To inform the Farm Manager of any major issues / problems.

  • To comply with Health & Safety regulations.

  • Willing to undertake on-going training.
