As part of our ongoing development of our Shropshire farming operation, we are looking to recruit a new team member for our spring calving herd.
The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting the herd manager in the day to day operation of our 300 spring calving cows. The herd is calved from 5th February in a 12 week block, with all cows dry by 24th December. We operate a grass based system, with concrete sleeper tracks to every paddock and newly renovated feeding and housing facilities.
The responsibilities will include:
•Regular milking of the cows in a Waikato 24:48 parlour, identify and treat ill cows and follow our protocols to achieve bacto and SCC KPIs
•Maintaining our high animal welfare standards
•Grass measurement and feed allocation
•Basic farm maintenance
•Basic tractor work, including yard scraping and feeding with telehandler
•Calf rearing, colostrum management,
•Some youngstock / drystock
Applicants will be expected to operate within our high animal welfare, and health and safety standards, and be able to maintain procedures in the absence of the herd manager on weekends and holidays.
A sense of humour, flexibility, common sense, and an ability to work in a team is an essential part of the role. A strong work ethic and ability to follow strict protocol is required during the busy calving periods.
In return we offer a salary dependant on experience between £25,000-£30,000 per year, 35 days holiday plus a day of per week from July January. Training is given in all aspects of the job and we have a lot of options for progression with the wider grasslands enterprise. Unfortunately we cannot offer accommodation currently, but can help with close links to local options.
