Farming background

Pre-apprenticeship in Agriculture -Borders Machinery Ring, June 2021 - Nov 2021

Designed to give me the foundation skills to kick start a career in agriculture I have undertaken initial training in tractor and trailer driving, ATVs, fencing, sheep work including sheering, a first aid course and telescopic handler training. My first placement was on a cattle and arable farm where I helped with the harvest, looked after the cattle and general farm maintenance.

Farm Hand - September 2021 - November 2021

Recently employed as a seasonal worker to help with harvest. My role involved picking and grading potatoes and carrots, outdoors for long periods of time. I needed a good eye and quick hands to removed dirt, rocks, rotten and unripe veg from a conveyor belt along with steady feet to do this while standing on the back of the machinery while in operation.

NC Countryside Management SRUC September 2020 June 2021

I studied countryside management at SRUC Oatridge. As part of this course, I am looking at the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, rural land uses, geodiversity, habitat management and practical skills like countryside woodwork, fence construction and path work. These units involve using a variety of tools, including power tools, with the appropriate PPE. I am also responsible for logging my daily tasks to help with the completion of online modules

Prior to this, I worked in a outdoor centres delivering adventurous activities. This gave me a good understanding of health and safety, working in hazardous environments and being flexible and adaptable to changes in tasks throughout the day.
