Farming background

06/20- present: Herd Manager for Matai Trust, Taramoa, New Zealand

Currently working on a 600 cow, spring block calving farm in Southland, New Zealand. Farm system entirely reliant on grass production, so I am responsible for assisting with all grazing and pasture management decisions concerning the herd. This extends to the operation of farm machinery, and the effluent irrigator for nutrient management too. I am responsible for the other 2 full time members of staff when sharemilkers not present, and ensuring that milking hygiene and efficiency are maintained at a high standard at all times. Heat detection and choosing cows to be put up for AI are a key part of my role during the mating period, to help sharemilkers reach their herd reproductive targets. Throughout the season, I ensure the quick identification, and successful treatment of all sick cows (like mastitis, milk fever etc.) or make sure they receive the appropriate preventative care (eg. hoof trimming).

06/19-05/20 Farm Assistant for Matai Trust, Taramoa, New Zealand

Milking 600 cows, through a 40:80 herringbone parlour, twice daily. Day to day duties included, but were not limited to; running the effluent irrigator, break fencing for the rotational grazing system, farm maintenance tasks like fencing and weed spraying, youngstock work, and assisting with all stock tasks, such as vaccinating, drenching and drying off.

08/18 05/19: Relief Milker at a Dairy farm, Salisbury.

Working alternate weekends, milking 800 cows through a 70 bail rotary parlour. Duties also included use of yard tractors and assisting with calf rearing, for this split block calving herd.

02/14 05/19: Weekend and holiday work, Farm, Downton

Helping with year round management tasks for the sheep flock (340 breeding Romney ewes). Involvement included; outdoor lambing, shearing, fencing and seasonal vet and med tasks, alongside running my own small flock of breeding Herdwicks, and privately selling the hogget and mutton produced.
