I spent 15 months in a 2000 acre arable enterprise with my main roles including: corn / straw carting, stacking bales, cultivations, rolling, fertiliser application (bredal spreader), topping, hay / silage making, and muck spreading. All tasks were completed with John Deere tractors ranging from 100-300 horsepower.
Additional harvest staff on a 2300 acre arable farm. Roles varied from: corn carting, cultivations, topping, equipment maintenance, grain store management, and loading grain lorries.
When working in livestock enterprises equipment usage was also paramount in all businesses I have worked in. Tasks have included: Slurry tanking, muck spreading, fencing (with loader and tractor post knockers), scraping sheds (tractor and loader), bedding sheds (using a straw chopper), moving livestock (tractor and trailer), and hay / silage making. These tasks have been completed with a variety of tractors and loaders including: Case, Massey Furgerson, Manitou, Merlo, John Deere and JCB.
Additional lambing staff lambing 3000 ewes outdoors taking responsibility of a quarter of the flock on the Dorset Downs. Roles included: catching sheep, helping ewes lamb and managing welfare along with associated tasks. 1000 store lambs were also managed alongside the breeding flock.
Additional Lambing staff managing 1500 ewes indoors. During times of staff shortages I spent a period working night shifts managing the flock independently.
As well as lambing I have spent time on both these farms for relief work helping with larger tasks such as worming, foot trimming, and shearing.
When working on a mixed estate relief cattle work was a key part of my job working alternate weekends and during periods when the herdsman was away managing cattle and completing routine tasks. I was also involved in calving 75 suckler cows and welfare management such as clipping, worming, and PD.
I have also worked on a large dairy farm as a university placement. Roles included some relief milking, calf rearing, bedding, scraping and feeding.
