Other equipment experience

I have grown up and worked on a multidisciplinary farm in Zimbabwe where we grew 150 hectares each of tobacco, barley, wheat, maize, Rhodes grass and reared 600 beef cattle. I have comprehensive knowledge on tractor and implement mechanics with a sound understanding of how most systems operate. My experience is mainly with John Deere tractors and combines however I do have some with other brands such as Case and Massey Fergusson.

Most tractors and implements are older and require extensive maintenance to ensure they run correctly. I am experienced with reversible ploughs, zero-till planters and square balers.

Other livestock experience

On the farm I grew up now we reared 600 head of a Mashona Stud heard on natural pastures. These animals were fed on crop residue as a supplement between crop rotations. I can perform basic handling manoeuvres such as dipping and ear-tagging.

Farming background

2018-2021 - Ranch - farm manager - I have carried out this role on my family farm during every university vacation including one year full time during the lockdown period of 2020 when universities were closed.

On this multi-disciplinary farm tobacco, wheat, barley, maize and Rhodes grass are grown with beef cattle being reared as well. On farm operations are as diverse as the crops grown and a large emphasis on sustainability and regenerative agriculture has been pushed over the more recent years.

Managerial roles in which I was involved mainly consisted of people management, with the farm employing over 300 workers who are all required to work harmoniously in team situations. Other roles include keeping to cropping manuals and schedules to do with land preparation, tilling, spraying, watering and harvesting of 18 pivot-watered lands. Tobacco seedlings are grown in seedbeds for 3 months and a keen eye for detail and strict adherence to both chemigation and fumigation law is imperative.

Various meetings with agronomists, company representatives, government officials and land owners are common and require seamless integration with people from varying backgrounds to develop meaningful relationships. Overall, an attention to cropping detail whilst managing large labour forces and navigating multiple relationships between varied social and business classes have been required.

2020 -Farm - farm manager - I was hired to complete this project on a 150 Hectare Citrus farm.

The project consisted of designing, constructing and erecting an off-grid booster pump station to serve 11 orchard blocks of varying citrus trees. The station was also used as a central fertigation site and consisted of 11 dedicated pumps feeding individual blocks from a common inlet manifold. The entire system ran off of a 1.5 kW solar system on its roof.

I was given full autonomy over my team and the project and after my design plan had been signed off by the farm owner construction of integral parts such as roof trusses went underway. Erection of the 8 meter tall trusses presented an issue as the farm did not possess any tall lifting equipment, however with some ingenuity an erection plan was formulated and carried out. This project was very hands on and required many man hours as construction of all the components was done on farm by my team and I whilst normal farm operations such as spraying and pruning of trees continued.

The deadlines were met despite the usual lockdown issues presented along the way and the station is now fully functional running off solar power.
