I grew up on a beef farm therefore had a small amount of experience with beef cattle. I've worked with pigs for a year, starting in the grower unit to working my way up to running the farrowing house. I did a small amount of lambing duties at college. The last year I have been in New Zealand working on a dairy farm doing all duties calf rearing, milking in a 50 side rotary, treating and administrating antibiotics. Drenching and moving cattle.

I approached a farm inDumfries & Galloway to arrange a placement for experience in a large dairy farm. I spent six weeks there after leaving school to gain more knowledge and understanding of Agriculture before I started to study Agriculture at college in September of 2014. This was fantastic opportunity learning about herd management and husbandry of stock. Duties carried out were calf rearing, injecting and treating of sick animals, milking and general care to the cattle.
Here is whereI carried out the daily routine of looking after the environment in which the stock lived in and also the husbandry of the pigs to ensure the production could meet a high standard. My first role was looking after the weaners, where then I later progressed to the farrowing house. I also had the opportunity to go in the service house undertaking bore management and AI. Within our health plan we were authorised to teeth and tale piglets to minimize things such as tale biting and therefore I was fully trained to do this.
My previous employment. Tasks were carting human waste to farmers fields, to be able to do this we had to carry out samples to ensure the Ph levels within the soil met requirements to spread the waste. During my time here I also led maize for six weeks for Staples in Lincolnshire. I have also had on farm experience with a tele-handler.
I decided to take a year out to go to NZ. The farm took me on for the year. The herd consisted of 600 milking through a 50 bail rotary, with automatic cup removers, with once a year calving. I assisted with a few calving's but have mainly reared the calves and milked. A small amount of tractor work was carried out helping carting bales and also cultivating. During the quite periods I carried out weed control using a sprayer on the back of a quad and also using a wick boom for things such as rushes. Other tasks were break fences, ear tagging, helping assist with foot trimming and general farm maintenance.
I've recently completed harvest 2020 here. Tasks completed were irrigating, carting cereals and then leading potatoes.
Agricultural contractors 2020:
