Farming background

May 2012 Present /January 2021

Farming 200Ha at  Farm Greenhead, Brampton, on an FBT. Lambing 350 Lleyn X New Zealand Texel and Lleyn X New Zealand Suffolk ewes and 270 hoggs. Selling 60 older ewes with lambs at foot, and 130 hoggs with lambs at foot, plus store & fat lambs through Longtown market, and S.K. Livestock each year. Where we have managed to establish a good reputation for quality stock. A beef unit consisting of 15 pedigree Dexter cows, producing pedigree Dexter calves for private sales of Dexter beef. 15 Dexter X Aberdeen Angus cows put to a pedigree Aberdeen Angus Bull producing 10 to 12-month-old stores. Sold through Carlisle market. BVD free and no signs Johnes or IBR. Most of the 200Ha is in the Higher-Level stewardship, for wading birds, flora & fauna and native breeds. In February 2019. I employed a student as weekend help during lambing, and after leaving collage in July 2019 she started full time with us. Although she had no previous agricultural experience, she has shown great aptitude and is now training her own sheep dog.

August 2001 May 2012

Farm Manager  Farm, Owston Ferry, North Lincs. Then bought another 270Ha over the next 3 years. In 2006,  Employing 1 part time tractor driver and up to 24 casuals. Cropping for the Farm, Winter Wheat, Winter OSR, Spring Beans and Red and white Cabbage. I rented land out for Potatoes, Onions, Beetroot, Carrots, and Vining peas agreeing terms and rents. The vast majority of the land was grade 1 warp, (river mud) I was able to keep cultivations to a minimum, often just subsoiling tramlines and then direct drilling with a Vaderstad Drill. OSR was subsoiled in. Responsibilities included, machinery policy and purchase. Planning field operations for contractors. Working with the plant growers and organising the sequential planting in the glass house, then in the field for the cabbage. Selling surplus cabbage, not required for the 900t Greencore contract. SFP claims and land swaps for vegetable land rented out. CSS claims, and management of the scheme. Plus 2001 to 2003 Spraying, Liquid Fert. Application, Drilling and all cultivations for our own cropping, with the part time tractor driver. The 4 cold stores totalling 3,400t. 1,700t for cabbage plus silver skin onions and fruit juice concentrate stored for Greencore. (I often achieved the title of supplier of the month to the Greencore factory at Selby). 1,700t rented out for potatoes. Growing my own cereal and osr seed I was able to test the seed for disease and most years put no seed dressing on. I swapped straw for muck with pig farm, a duck farm and 2 beef units. Contractors were used for combining and carting. In 2004 it was decided to use contractors for all operations, except cabbage. Although Managing the Farm was very rewarding, I missed working with livestock, so in October 2007 my wife Jill and myself started a small Dexter beef herd with 5 cows and calves, and 5 bulling heifers, renting small unwanted grass paddocks in nearby villages, and selling the beef privately. In September 2009 the cattle moved to a Farm, on the Organic estate, and were joined by 140 pedigree Lleyn ewes. Making use of their clover leys and giving me the opportunity to observe first hand, production on an organic farm, as well as managing our own livestock. Selling pedigree organic shearlings privately, and the fat ram lambs sold privately for meat and through Selby market. In 2010 a sample of my Spring Beans was judged the Best in Britain by the British Edible Pulse Association. 2001- 2011. Served on the Isle of Axholme Internal Drainage Board.
