After 4 very happy years, where I was in charge of the dairy herd with the help of the farm manager I was able to advance this Pedigree herd of Holsteins from 9000lts to 13,000lts with the massive gains to be made from VMS milking, selective breeding using Genomic testing and focused nutritional requirements. Whilst keeping a calving interval of around 385 days.
It was with great sadness that I was made redundant due to the dispersal of the herd and the tendering of the land associated with the farm, meaning my wife and I needing to move back to Devon where we have our own small holding.

After 5 years away from the day to day management of a running a dairy herd I have realised although I like my current job with NMR, the role is changing from what it was to focusing on sales and I have been missing working with cows. You could say I have never really stopping being involved with cows as I have worked for the multi-award winning Organic herd at H****** Farm, they create a lovely atmosphere to work in and that has made the decision to go back into dairy farming very easy.
