I grew up on the west coast of Skye helping my dad with his 600 sheep and 10 cows, from a very young age I was out gathering and handling sheep at every opportunity. After leaving secondary school I moved to Edinburgh to study at Oatridge College doing an HNC in Agriculture. When I left college I was given a fantastic opportunity to start my farming career in my first shepherd role. I had 12 great years managing 1500 ewes and 100 cows. The farm was sold to the Forestry Commission and this allowed my employer to retire. I left after finding employment as Farm Manager in November 2009.
During my time as farm manager I was responsible for 2000 ewes and 120 cows as well as all of the day to day running of the farm. Unfortunately my time in this role was cut short when my partner took seriously ill and we decided to return home so that my parents could help me with our son and I took on contract work. After a few months I received the offer of a single handed job as Shepherd, here I was responsible for 700 ewes and all of the day to day decisions not the farm. I also played a large part in grouse management on the estate and enjoyed various different roles on shoot days. After almost 3 years of total control of the sheep flock, the opportunity of farm manager at a large high hill estate was presented to me and this resulted in my family and I moving back to an area I knew very well. I was excited by the huge challenge that offered itself.
In my 6.5 years of employment on the estate, I completely restructured the farming business as well as a total overhaul of livestock, staff, kit, and land quality. I have maximised our BPS claim with the purchase of a large quantity of region 1 and 2 subsidy, this has paid off, with the business moving from a 6 figure loss, before my arrival, to 6 figure profits in 6.5 years. In this time I was in charge of staff housing renovations and I in charge on ensuring that these properties are maintained to a high standard, along with the upkeep of all farm buildings, large fencing projects and several new handling facilities. I was responsible for a team of five staff, a large number of contractors and students (when in placements). I have a proven track record in record keeping.
I have experience in strategic forestry planting of small and large scale plantations.
I was offered a more senior position at another estate which I accepted. After my arrival I learned of many historical issues and decided the position was not for me.
I feel strongly that I combine a good working knowledge of production with a solid business sense and now feel ready to take the next step in my career.
