I grew up on the west coast helping my dad with his 600 sheep and 10 cows. From a very young age I was out gathering and handling at every opportunity. After leaving secondary school I moved to Edinburgh to study at Oatridge College, but left my studies early due to being offered a fantastic opportunity to start my farming career. I had almost 12 great years in this role managing 1500 ewes and 100 cows. The farm was sold as my employer was looking to retire.
My next role was as farm manager, I was responsible for 2000 ewes and 120 cows and the day to day running of the farm.
In my next role I was responsible for 700 ewes and also played a large part in grouse management on the estate and enjoyed various different roles on shoot days. After almost 3 years of total control of the sheep flock there.
I was in the role as farm manager for over six years and implemented a total restructure of the farming business as well as a total overhaul of staff, kit, land quality and maximising our BPS claim with the purchase of a large quantity of region 1 and 2 subsidy, this has paid off with the business moving from a 6 figure loss before my arrival to 6 figure profits in 6 years. In this time I have also overseen staff housing renovations, large fencing projects, new farm buildings and several new handling facilities. I feel strongly that I combine a good working knowledge of production with a solid business sense and this will be the key to survival in the future.
My passion and dedication to my chosen career has pushed me forward and helped me gain invaluable experience and the skill set to help me achieve my desired goals.
I decided to change direction for a period of time to set up another business and I am now ready to get back to what I love doing.
