01/2020 - I am currently Head Shepherd on the same farm I was Shepherd on from 2014 - 2018 having been asked to return to take on the role. My increased responsibilities include staff management and training, planing and managing grazing rotation, including winter forage working with the arable team, keeping medicine records and assisting the owner with other record keeping. I have enjoyed management at a larger scale with 5000+ ewes and work regularly with the vet to ensure welfare standards are a priority, I have also enjoyed attending meetings with people such as drug companies and health and safety. This role has been a fantastic opportunity to apply my experience and we have seen improvements in welfare and therefore productivity of the sheep.

08/2018 - 01/2020 Head Stockman I was responsible for all livestock and day to day management of a mixed, new farm on a remote Shetland Island. I managed both the lowland farm and hill farming, the livestock included a flock of about 600 crossbred ewes, a small pedigree flock of Suffolks, a flock of about 300 shetlands and a smaller flock of Blackfaces. I was also responsible for about 30 pigs and 60 cows which included shorthorns, galloways and highlands as well as some crossbreds. Farming on a remote island poses it's own unique challenges and was a fantastic experience. As the farm is in its early years this gave me the opportunity to improve not only the livestock but also the infrastructure of the farm such as building work (concreting, roofing, shed design, handling system design) and grassland improvements. As head stockman I had the opportunity to develop flock and herd health plans and was responsible for all the usual stock care and land rotation for grazing and silage as well as management of all breeding regimes, calving, farrowing and lambing and the small team of helpers. From Shetland I traveled to the very North Coast of Scotland to work on a large hill farm near Durness for several months building on my hill farming experience, this was an incredible opportunity to see hill farming on a larger scale.

Shepherd 07/2014 05/2018 I was offered a permanent role as 3rd Shepherd after working with them in my spare time through a lambing period. After some initial training working alongside their head shepherd I was quickly asked to take on the role of 2nd Shepherd. My role involved managing roughly half of their flock of 5000+ mules, I began by working under the guidance and advice of the head shepherd, I learnt a great deal and for the vast majority of my time later in the role I worked independently making decisions which increased the profitability of the flock. Throughout lambing and shearing I was responsible for managing and working with a team of people, on a day to day basis my role included all aspects of shepherding including routine vaccinations, drenching, hoof care, general health checks, treatment of disease and management, moving sheep and selecting fat stock. My knowledge and practice here has noticeably improved the health and output of the flock. Through the winter we grazed fodder rape and sugar beet and a variety of grassland throughout the summer so I have the ability to develop grazing rotations to benefit particular flocks.

Stockman / farmhand 2008 07/2014 This was a varied role where I learnt a great deal about all aspects of farming both arable and livestock, I also completed my diploma whilst working here. In this role I was looking after about 120 beef cattle from calves to slaughter, this was a barley based system working closely with daily live weight gains to maximise profit margins. Alongside this I worked with their 1000 acres of arable land which included combinable crops and sugarbeet, I was responsible for corn carting, bailing, ploughing and other land cultivations, hedge cutting, some grain storage management as well as the upkeep of farm machinery and buildings. Farmhand throughout later years of school studies -2008 This was my first full time role after finishing school, I worked throughout harvest and had a good introduction to full time arable work. My main role was carting grain and potatoes whilst working as part of a large team. Here I developed a good understanding of driving and the maintenance of farm machinery.
