Other livestock experience

I worked as a herdman for just over a year following sixth form. Due to the herd manager leaving I was left in charge of the day to day running of the herd for a period of months. I am a clean and competent milker, with lots of experience in mastitis detection. I can also AI. As Well as being a competent foot trimmer having been in several training courses. I worked on four farm as a relief milker, but would often undertake other activities such as herd health yard work or fencing grazing allocation etc. They ran a variety of systems one milk 180 high yielding holsteins and another milks 225 kiwi x cows on an extended grazing system so I am experienced with a variety of management systems. I then took a full time position on a 300 cow extended grazing spring calving herd.

I took on management of the herd in December 2019. 300 x bred cows all outwintered on fodder beet plus followers on kale. Despite challenging conditions of both winters I have kept the cows at an average BCS of 2.5 to 3 pre calving.

Calving in 2020 went well with just 4 cows having RFM and 4 milk fevers, despite late turnout and a spring drought. Breeding was completed with a 99% submission rate. pd results show an 8% empty rate. Down from 28 last year.

Budget was to push numbers to 331. Through the improved conception rate we have achieved the end goal of 350 cows in the first year with 361 in calf leaving room for extra problem cow culls.

250 cows calving in the first 6 weeks, reducing the overall block to 8 weeks with only 4 cows in week 8.

Calving 2021 is nearly complete with 90% calved on day 32.
