I have both practical experience in beef and dairy . I gained valuable dairy experience as an assistant herdsman during my time at Aller court where I further gained various skills in youngstock rearing and care as well as the recognition of illness and the treatments thereof. I have used software such as uniform to check calving dates and cow information , as well as record condition and mobility scores to keep in accordance with the farm assurance schemes. I have established rotational grazing camps in both my roles to ensure good cow performance. I assisted in various calving's and calving monitoring. I have experience in milking operations as i assisted the herdsman in regular milking routines as well as relief milked during his annual leave. I also assisted in the day to day movement of both cattle and the flock of sheep as well as assisted in routine vaccination and dosing of the livestock and sheering tasks. I routinely bedded up and cleaned out pens. I also assisted the farmer with debudding operations

Currently I am an assistant farm manager/ herd manager in South Africa where we are developing a pedigree suckler cattle herd on a 4000 acre regenerative grazing operation to restore degraded and eroded landscape back to full grazing potential. Here I am responsible for herd nutrition , through rationing and supplemental feeding programs along side the grazing to ensure optimal cow condition ,health and performance. We have doubled the breeding herd through difficult conditions such as drought period. Here I am also responsible for dosing and vaccination of the cattle and communication with vets and other consultants to ensure herd health and performance. I am also responsible for calf monitoring ,calving recordings and for the breeding management in the herd and have recently acquired a new pedigree Nguni bull to cover the herd with some fresh genetics.

In my role as Assistant Herdsman, I worked in close partnership with the Head Herdsman and Farmer to support the day-to-day operations of a high-performing dairy unit. My responsibilities encompassed a wide range of tasks aimed at ensuring optimal animal health, welfare, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities:

•Calf Care: Responsible for the daily feeding and hygiene maintenance of calf housing to promote optimal health and development. Monitored calves for signs of illness, ensured early intervention, and maintained accurate records of all treatments and medications administered.

•Livestock Scoring: Conducted conformation and mobility scoring to assess herd health, identify issues proactively, and inform management decisions.

•Pasture Management: Collected and analysed grass growth data using a plate meter to support rotational grazing plans. Assisted with strategic herd movements to optimise forage utilisation and pasture condition.
