Farming background

2020 Present, Manager in SW Scotland

2017 2020, Shepherd on the Otterburn Ranges Northumberland

2004 2017 General Farm Worker on livestock farm in Cheshire

I grew up on my familys hill farm on the Cheshire/Derbyshire border. As a family we ran a flock of 600 Swaledale ewes and 100 Suckler Cows.

When I finished school I went to work with a local farmer in Cheshire. We ran 800 cross bred ewes and 50 suckler cows. Here I gained a lot of experience in all aspects of grass land management and machinery, also the day to day running of a stock farm.

In 2017 I was offered a position as a shepherd on the Otterburn ranges in Northumberland. My partner Faye and I moved to take on the running of 3500 hefted blackface ewes that ran over 8000 acres, with the added complexities of the land being owned and used by the MOD. We also had 400 acres of parkland which was used for grazing the twins and over wintered hoggs.

In 2020 we moved to Southwest Scotland to manage an estate farm. We manage 700 cross bred ewes, 600 blackface and 110 suckler cows over an area of 2800 acres

We manage all aspects of the day to day running of the farm including engaging with external suppliers and services as well as communicating with the estates factor on financial and environmental aspects including the development of woodlands and other environmental scheme requirements.

Extensive experience of profitable and efficient production of both hill ewes, cross bred ewes and suckler cow herd management, combined with efficient forage production.
