Other equipment experience

I have worked numerous harvests. Starting as a teenager and continuing through university summer vacations.

As with lambing experience, I have managed a few harvests during my teaching years too, mainly between career moves or summer vacations.

I am a competent tractor driver and am more than capable of corn carting from the combine. I have also spent time driving combines, but some time ago. In addition, I have experience of harrowing, ploughing, baling and using telehandlers.

My last experience is some 6 years ago. I may need a quick reminder of the latest machinery to get up to speed, but this would not be a problem.

Other livestock experience

I helped with lambings growing up, then did yearly lambings throughout my degree and post grad years. One of the lambings was at a farm near Dufftown working alongside Edinburgh Genetics, carrying out embryo transplants with Charollais sheep.

I then taught for just over 22 years, and still managed to get a few lambings in between jobs or helping friends lamb during Easter holidays.

I left teaching about 12 years ago, and although Ive largely worked in hospitality and natural history since, have done another 3 lambings- the last 5 years ago.

This was working nights alone on a farm on north Northumberland. It was mainly mules, with a few Blackface and Leicester.

Im happy assisting with the most difficult of lambings, setting on, tubing, recognising and treating common health problems, vaccinating, making sure lambs get enough colostrum etc.

Farming background

I qualified as a Physics teacher in 1991 and taught successfully for over 22 years in London, Somerset and Hertfordshire. In addition, I was involved in teacher training and have been a contributory author to books on Science education. In 2002 I was made a Chartered Physicist and Member of the Institute of Physics.

Since then, I have worked in IT, hospitality, natural history and volunteered for a variety of organisations.

Semi-retired, Im looking at the possibility of doing lambings and harvest work for the next few years. Im 58, but pretty fit- Ive just got back from cycling 500 miles through the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

Agricultural Experience

Briefly, I was brought up on a farm in Northumberland and then studied Agriculture at Newcastle University, before going on to study Physics and getting my Post Grad Cert in Education.
