Farming background

JULY 2023 - PRESENT

Head Shepherd/Stocksman, Sheffield

My main role in this position was to take the lead in the management and supervision of a flock of 300 breeding ewes. These were a mixture of native/rare breeds such as Hebrideans and Scottish Black Faces as well as commercial breeding stock such as Charollaise, Mules, Texels and Suffolks. I undertook all aspects of paperwork, health checks, health monitoring, breeding, and lambing periods etc. As well as the management of the flock, I also assisted with the fold of Highland Cattle and herds of Dexter cattle. Other stock that I often dealt with as part of the daily runnings, were goats, pigs, dairy cattle and turkeys. I began with the farm at a time of farming practice change as they made the transition to regenerative farming meaning we often introduced many types of livestock and implementation of different techniques. Other tasks included:

Worked in a safe manner whilst controlling machinery (tractor license held).

Identifying and managing incidents and livestock health issues, formulating treatment plans and understanding when to escalate to the appropriate pathways.

Maintained hygiene as well as health and safety protocols.

Ensured the safety and health of a range of livestock (cattle, sheep and goats etc).

Worked flexible shifts, including working single-handed 24-hour periods during intensive lambing periods.

Undertook relevant training to upskill and aid in farm processes.

Management/assistance with social media content, public experiences and some paperwork duties.

MARCH 2017 APRIL 2017

Farmhand/Lambing Assistant - Peak District

Assisted for a 4-week period upon a family run farm within the Peak district. A traditional hill farm, with a beef suckler herd and sheep. Main duties were to monitor and ensure the welfare of expectant and birthing ewes, both housed inside and outside. Completed some work on the hills and moorlands, as well as tagging, castrating, tube/bottle feeding etc. Worked alongside the owners and independently, ensuring adequate livestock nutrition and welfare. Provided an excellent source of support to farmer and their complied task, and consistently showed an unwavering work ethic and willingness to learn.
