General Farm Worker/Apprentice helping manager of the estate. Job in <->Scotland<->

Farm TypeSheep, Beef

The estate has a small fold of Highland cattle due to start calving in February and some Cheviot and Texel cross Blackface sheep which will start lambing in April.  The Estate lies on an island in the Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland.

The work is focussed on the welfare of the animals, checking and feeding them on a daily basis and also making sure that the holiday cottages are properly maintained and ready for the rental season starting in the spring.

It is a great opportunity to learn how a small highland estate functions and to work with a highly experienced stockman.

The estate covers close to 4000 acres and the ground runs from sea level up to 2000ft.  Much of it is hill ground and there is a little inbye.

The pedigree Highland fold has 23 cows and followers, including a Highland and a Shorthorn bull and totalling just over 40 head.  There are close to 150 sheep as well.

The farm has the required equipment including tractor, trailers, muck spreader, post driver, and quad bike.

The animals are all checked and fed daily and the fences and equipment all require regular maintenance.  We have an elite health status on the fold and all our animals are in peak condition.  We do have a local vet to help us.  We try and keep the holiday lets maintained to a really high standard and we cannot afford equipment not to work when we need it!

The farm is run by a manager and his wife who live in the steadings. The job will be to do whatever may be required to support them through calving which is one of the busiest times of the estate's year.

The job will take hard work. Sometimes the weather, wind and rain can make it very tough. On occasion, when the weather is good, the Isle of Mull can be the best place in the world.
