Assistant Herd Manager (2IC) job near <->Okehampton, Devon<-> required for 390 acre Dairy farm

Farm TypeDairy

Curworthy Farm is a 390a dairy farm with 300a of grassland and 90a woodland. 5 miles north of Okehampton, Devon.  We currently have approx. 280 dairy cows, 125 dairy heifers and 70 beef cattle.  The beef animals are mostly dairy bred bulls that are intensively reared and finished indoors.  The dairy herd calves in the autumn, currently in an 11 week block, but this is reducing with a target of 9 weeks.  Cows are paddock grazed in summer and TMR fed in winter including bought in maize silage.  The cows were previously entirely pedigree Holsteins, bred for type and longevity rather than yield.  The main focus of breeding has now changed to fertility and calving ease, and a three way cross breeding programme has been introduced using Norwegian red initially, and fleckvieh or montbeliarde as the third breed.  Cows are milked in a 12/24 herringbone with auto-id, milk meters, in parlour feeding and cluster flushing.  An electronic heat detection system is installed.  Plans are in place to expand the parlour to a 24/48 herringbone, with automatic sorting gate and an improved footbath and herringbone AI race. Cubicles are bedded with recycled manure solids from a slurry separator. We are looking for a capable individual who is willing to be flexible and to be involved in all aspects of farm work.  The main focus of daily activity is care of livestock – most other activity ultimately facilitates this.  Good stockmanship is essential, as is the ability to communicate well with other members of the team. The assistant herd manager will work alongside us as a team, but should also be able to take responsibility for the day to day running of the farm for short periods if we are absent.
