Farming background

I grew up on a farm in Somerset, then studied geology at university. I worked as a geologist in the opencast coal mines for three years until they shut, then worked as a geotechnical engineer for a drilling company before becoming a consultant engineer working mainly on construction projects. After 8 years in the profession I decided it was time for a career change and decided to come back to the farming industry. I spent 3 months on a paddock grazing dairy farm in New Zealand milking 1000 cows twice a day through a 54 bale rotary parlour. I just missed calving but reared calves to weaning before moving them to another block. While working there I also did some claw trimming under supervision. Earlier I spent a couple of weeks in April lambing on a 1000 ewe upland farm in Dumfriesshire, lambing Blackface, Mules, and Texels.
