Currently responsible for a large 140 cow suckler herd with Longhorn, Stabiliser and Angus crosses and 800 ewe unit, made up of Polled Dorsets, Lleyns and a small number of Hebrideans. Responsible for 2 members of staff on a daily basis and seasonal staff as required. I have worked on improving fertility across Cows and Ewes since I came to the estate, dramatically reducing barrener numbers and improving calving - running 104% calving in the spring herd and currently 107% in the Autumn herd I actively plan and monitor grazing, sub dividing clover legs in order to maximise grazing and growth rates all animals taken to finishing. I use EID in alll sheep work and have been converting the herd over to electronic tags, to make handling more efficient and allow accurate records and notes to be kept and used in heifer replacement selection. All stock is currently sent direct to slaughter. I work closely with our vets and have re-configured our flock and herd health plans to lead to further improvements. Always looking at alternatives to the norm in order to increase productivity
