My employment on horse yards and brief work experience on a mixed beef, sheep and arable farm have allowed me to work in environments where large agricultural machines were being utilised, however I have never been able to drive or operate them myself. At Harper as well as other yards I have been able to work alongside these machines and help those that work in, on and around them. As I personally have never operated them myself but do have a clean, full driver’s licence, I would be willing and welcome any help that would enable me to drive them be a greater help in the livestock sector.

Other livestock experience

Working on a mixed beef, sheep and arable farm I was able to experience handling and care for day old calves which consisted of bottle feeding, laying out hard feed, dehorning and castrating the young bullocks and steers. This was a highly enjoyable experience and one I wish to be able to do again on a large scale where I can now, with my degree to help me, apply what I have learned to my past and future endeavours. At the horse riding yard where I worked previously, mares were bred from to produce the next generation of riding school horses that were born at the yard. This allowed me to work with new born foals and participate in their learning, weaning and breaking as well as observe their behavioural and physical maturation to competent riding school horses. Although I have more experience with equine young stock, I am eager and willing to learn about how my already existing skills can be translated into the dairy and overall cattle industry.
