During my time at school and sixth form, I was part of the school’s Young Farmers Club. This resulted in me being a member for 7 years and on the committee for two years in a row, standing as the Vice Chairman. During my time here I learnt various skills and expanded my knowledge when it came to the animal husbandry side of the farm. Every day, morning and evening, I looked after the animals, by bedding them down for the night, feeding, checking waters etc etc. I also learnt skills such as lambing and during my final two years actually lambed my first few lambs. As a club we took part at county shows, meaning our animals had to be halter trained throughout the year to ensure they were ready for the shows. This meant I was reglarly handling the animals, especially the cattle, to prepare them in time for the shows. Within my time at Young Farmers I won many awards. These included many prizes within our club, as a result of my hard work and dedication to the Young Farmers and animals, as well as winning many prizes at shows with my cattle, such as numerous Champions and Reserve Champions, many First and Second Prizes and other places at the Kent Count Show and at many smaller shows competing throughout the 7 years. After my time at the school farm I decided to gain some knowledge within the dairy industry and arranged some work experience over the space of a few weekends at a dairy farm. This allowed me to learn and expand my knowledge within the dairy industry, as I did not have this opportunity whilst at the school farm. During my time here, I learnt how to milk within the parlour and also carried out some shifts within the yard, looking after the calves and cattle being milked.

Farming background

Dairy Farm- Whilst at the Dairy farm, my roles included carrying out the morning and evening shifts (5:30am-11am and 3pm-6:30pm), either milking the cattle within the parlour or working on the yard. This included moving cattle to and from the parlour at specific times, feeding and bedding down the calves, assessing each animal to ensure they were in a good condition and perfect health, ensuring new born calves received bottle fed colostrum and treating any unwell animals. Head Groom at John Parker International Horse Transport- During this employment, my daily duties involved caring of up to 24-48 horses a day, across two different yards and ensuring their welfare needs were met. This included mucking out to a high standard; not only for our own horses, but for other client’s horses (such as international riders), ensuring certain horses were fed to their dietary requirements. I also had to maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the yards and around the muck heap, certifying that the yard was swept and all equipment was stored correctly and appropriately. I was the only groom employed to complete this role, and would have to perform effectively and efficiently in order to complete all of the required tasks each day. Waitressing- My daily duties within this employment included; taking food orders, serving food and ensuring our customer’s experience and our food was to the best of our ability and met their satisfaction. During my employment, I also worked on the bar, serving drinks and alcohol. Alongside this I completed the daily and weekly cleaning jobs. As part of being the front of house staff, I had to learn to mix with a variety pf different customers and build a rapport to provide a better customer service.
