I am fully competent at operating a range of machinery in a safe and mindful manner. I have sound mechanical knowledge with a 'can do ' attitude. I have used both standard and direct drills over the years. Most recently with a TAEGE Drill. Ample discing and cultivating experience in various settings over my career. All aspects of silage and haymaking.I have used a 3 point linkage sprayer every year and am competent using agri-chemicals with a sound knowledge of weed control. I use a quad bike here in Canada to do all stockwork with my dogs, even in minus 30 temperatures.Horses,Landrovers and motorbikes have been my primary modes of transport over the years. Last year I operated a swather to swathe 2,000 acres of crops for winter feeding. I have used bulldozers, diggers, skidsteer for clearing fence lines, tracks and building platforms. I had begun my HGV licensing in New Zealand obtaining a Class 2 license (up to 18,000kgs).

SHEEP-Stock Manager on Hunter Valley Station NZ,for a period of 15 years. It was a 10,000HA hill country station carrying 12,000SU Merino ewes for breeding and wool production, and Hereford/Angus cattle from breeding through to finishing. Manager of Birch Hill Station, NZ for 3.5 years.A 450HA breeding & finishing block carrying 4,000SU comprised of 2500 Romney ewes for breeding and 3850 lambs for finishing, and 150 beef cattle. I managed to increase and maintain scanning and lambing percentages. BEEF-Currently Manager of Angus herd here in Canada since 2015, comprising 1,600 cows and 1,450 yearlings and 400-500 30 month old finishing cattle. We have 16,000 acres of pasture and crops including grain & brassica forage crops.I am solely responsible for all day to day activity on the farm. We calve in Spring. Our goal is minimum input with maximum output. I take pride in my working dogs and value them immensely. I train all my dogs myself and brought 2 with me from NZ to Canada.

Farming background

2012-2015 I was farm manager of Birch Hill Station, New Zealand. A 450HA breeding and finishing block carrying 4,000SU comprised of 2,500 breeding ewes, 3,850 lambs for finishing and 150 beef cattle. 1996-2012 I was stock manager on Hunter Valley Station, NZ. A 10,000HA hill country property carrying 12,000SU comprised of Merino ewes for breeding and wool production & Hereford/Angus cattle from breeding through to finishing. I am a fully competent farmer with an incredible work ethic and a reputation of loyalty.I take the welfare , safety and handling of stock/machinery seriously. I am proud of my animal husbandry skills. I am passionate about farming in a regenerative way whilst respecting traditional farming practice, and always have a goal to maximise stock and land potential. I embrace and enjoy latest research related to my practice, and in particular on the subject of soil health.I am a competent fencer, farrier & shearer. Fully competent with staff management and liaison. I practice accurate feed budgeting and pasture management resulting in goals achieved related to stock growth rates and optimum animal health. I am enthusiastic about trialling new ideas. We are leading the way here in Alberta with 'grass fed, hormone & antibiotic free beef', using brassica forage crops and rotational grazing based on New Zealand practice. We have 'open days' on the farm to discuss and encourage what we are practising here. I appreciate and support the development of regenerative farms, whilst not compromising performance, productivity and profitability.

Hobbies

In NZ I loved to play rugby. I was coach of a junior rugby team and my wife was the manager. I was president of the wool society. In Canada my wife and I play in a curling team each week. We also ice skate. Our children are on the ice hockey team, lacrosse team and dancing. My wife is Vice president of the school committee. We are very involved in fundraising and support most community activities. We love to keep and tend to a garden and vegetable patch. We love to explore the area we live in.
