Farming background

Recently became interested in farming and have been traveling to gain work experience. I have worked on the second biggest sheep station in Australia with 30,000 merino sheep over 10,000 sqkm. I helped at a start- up pig farm in Northern Tasmania. I have also done voluntary work on a farm in Italy with a small dairy herd that I was responsible for milking and moving from pasture to dairy. Farm also had sheep, goats, horses and poultry that I was responsible for feeding daily, collecting eggs and on one occasion assisting with artificial insemination of a dairy cow. I also volunteered on a sheep farm on the Shetland Isles. I arrived at the end of lambing season so I have a little experience with lambing. I was responsible for bottle feeding 6 orphaned lambs and dosing new born mothers and lambs. Most recently I have been working on a mixed use organic farm in Tuscany, Italy where my main duties have been feeding a 120 strong herd of rare-breed Cinta Senese pigs and 20 beef cattle. I was responsible for loading pigs for slaughter and for transport to new pasture, clearing cow pens, fixing fences and building new feeding areas. I also have a general practical knowledge of vegetable gardening on a small scale.
